Hal Higdon 1/2 Marathon Training Program - Novice 1 App Reviews

Nice app overall

Ive used this app for two half marathons. I loved it and think its a great training tool. Im using it once again for my 3rd half. I do wish I could change the long run days or adapt to my schedule. Sometimes I have to change my cross or rest days to a run day and although the app allows you to log training independently, it doesnt let you show the training as a run (will still say rest day etc). Also wish the run calendar line showed the actual date, not just week & day. Finally, on my last run the gps wasnt calculating my distance. Ive never had that issue before. I had to leave the app open and running (screen on) to keep it working. It was not like that before?? Totally drained the battery...maybe something in my settings is not right?? All in all a great training guide, the overall concept and journal are helpful. Some kinks, so $10 a little pricey, but it was worth it for me...a good training guide that helped me through my half marathons successfully.

Lame Ap :(

This ap was a huge let down for the price. For $10 I would expect a little more than this. The 5K Runner aps are way better and cost much less. I wish I could get my money back for this. Lame :(

Great app!

I use this app to train for my first half marathon and I loved it! I am about to start using it again to train for my 2nd. I love the encouraging words I hear while on my run. Great app!

GPS incorrect

The GPS feature in this app is way off. In runs it reads 6 miles before the 4 mile mark - very disappointing.

Worst Running App!!! Waste of $10!!

It constantly locks up! Doesnt work! Elementary design!!! Not user friendly! Cant change start day to Sunday or Monday depending if you are following his book/website- app starts on Sunday regardless. Doesnt show day of week...just goes by day number so you can very easily get confused. Even has constant misspellings throughout page and messages. Company needs to take a look at other running apps and make this one more user friendly and attractive. Love Hal Higdons plan, but this app stinks!

Can’t Believe I Paid for THIS!

Wish that I’d read the other review before purchasing. I didn’t even think that I needed to because the Hal Higdon name is so well-respected in the running community, but this app is really only good for seeing what your training schedule should be. I could’ve looked that up online and put it in my calendar if I’d known that’s what I’d be getting. The “pace” is constantly jumping up and down during my run (which is at a pretty steady pace) and I can’t delete a journal entry without deleting ALL of them. Also, if I accidentally record a “run” on the wrong date, when I correct the date (which was NOT easy to figure out), then that initially selected date still shows that I completed a workout on that day even when there are absolutely NO journal entries associated with it. :( This is the most that I’ve ever paid for a running app, and it’s probably the worst one that I have. :(

Not a good Gps tracker at all

My race is typically off by half a mile on this app. Not acceptable! It has frozen up and Ive emailed the company with no response. Would not recommend this app.

Meh

I downloaded the half-marathon app on recommendation from a friend. Im currently almost four weeks into the program. Immediately I found the schedule on the app confusing and easy to mess up. Also, the GPS on this app does NOT work on a track at all (and yet the free Apple Health app does - go figure). There are a lot of free half-marathon training schedules online, including on Hal Higdons website. Id recommend finding a schedule that works best for you and your fitness level, download a free app, like Map My Dog Walk, if you want to keep a log of your progress, and skip paying $9.99 for this one. There is just not enough here to make it work it.

Its wonderful!

This is the best app to get you ready and help you reach your goal. Great app!!!

Not worth $10

This app had a lot of potential to be better than the previous way Id used Hal Higdons workout plan, by just printing off the list and checking off boxes. However there were several things cumbersome about the app. The playlist feature didnt start playing like I wanted it to, and it accidentally deleted too easily. The GPS tracking button was too small. Itd be cool if the app actually sent me a reminder or notification to run, because otherwise I have to open the app to see. When I just print out the paper schedule I have it on my desk and that is my reminder. Overall, does not match Strava as a motivator for running.

Wish I could get my money back

The app does not show you your workout calendar until your official start date. Seems very cumbersome and not well designed. If this wasnt Hal Higdon workout plan no one would spend $10 on this app. Do yourself a favor and follow Hal Higdons training schedule from his website and do not waste your money on this app.

Race Day

I used this app exclusively to train for my first 1/2 marathon. Positives: After a few runs, I was able to figure out how to use it as I needed it. I like the journal feature and that you can adjust training dates to when you can do them. I also liked he add on Run Helper feature very much. I saved these in an email file and was able to easily see my progress in graph form. I also liked the simple graphics and the intuitiveness of the app. Negatives: Ditto the review that noted the play list wouldnt start consistently. Sometimes it would start with the training, but more often than not I would have to start my run, go to the volume alert, set that to high and then go back and choose my playlist. In addition, I would often have to repeat these steps because the music volume would drop in half after the split info or when one of Hals motivators came on. This was annoying but I still really liked this app... ...until race day. I Could Not get the app OR music to start for what felt like an eternity. In all fairness, it was only 3 minutes. And not to sound whiny, because I know I could have just used my playlist and run the race-but I had become used to seeing my splits, pace, etc. so the idea of not having it while I was waiting to start was anxiety provoking. But that wasnt the only surprise this app had in store for me! I came up to the 8 mile sign post and was feeling tired, but good! Wasnt paying attention to see if there were more mile sign posts (Im sure there were), so Im cruising along and it says I am at 12.9 miles! Im almost done! Ive got this! ...and I turned a corner and there was the 12 MILE SIGN POST!! The app had miscalculated by .9 MILES! Previous to this, it had always calculated correctly-so I never even thought to track this. I did finished the race-but at that moment I was totally defeated and wanted to cry. I think this app has a lot of great features, but some serious bugs that need to be addressed.
